NIST SP 800-82 Rev. 3

NIST SP 800-82 Revision 3 is the US National Institute of Standards and Technology's Guide to Operational Technology Security, published in 2023. It explains how to apply risk management and security controls to OT environments where availability and safety come before confidentiality.

Revision 3 broadened the scope from industrial control systems to OT generally and aligned the guidance with NIST SP 800-53 Rev. 5 controls and the Cybersecurity Framework. It covers OT architectures, threats, risk management, and an OT-specific overlay of security controls.

It is guidance, not a certification. Its practical use is as a checklist of what a defensible OT security program contains and as common language between plant engineering and corporate security.

Why it matters in cement, mining, and aggregates

For a cement or mining operator without a security team, 800-82 is the document to hand a new plant manager. Potenza's baseline controls are written to map onto its recommendations so a plant can show alignment without a separate compliance project.
