The exposure

In a full year of hands-on assessments across an active multi-plant cement operation, the pattern was structural: unsupported switching, weak IT/OT separation, and access nobody governed. Each condition is ordinary. Together they are the risk.
- The switching fleet is past vendor support
- Most of the OT switches carrying kiln and mill traffic were End-of-Life or Discontinued: no firmware fixes, no security patches, no guaranteed spares. Patch management is moot until the lifecycle problem is on a plan.
- IT and OT were never physically separated
- Sites that had run for years were establishing a baseline IT/OT boundary for the first time. Without it, a compromised office workstation is one hop from the control network.
- Remote and privileged access is ungoverned
- OEM technicians, integrators, and plant staff reach controllers through paths nobody inventoried. Legacy fieldbus segments and unmanaged, consumer-grade switches sit in production with no management plane at all.
